Faithful Extensions of Pravithanam Parish
The spiritual life of Pravithanam Parish flourishes through its vibrant chapels and religious communities. These sacred centers are not only places of worship and prayer but also spaces of education, healing, and service to the community. Each institution plays a unique role in the pastoral and social mission of the Church.
🕍 1. Anthinad Sacred Heart Chapel
The Anthinad Sacred Heart Chapel, situated along the Pala–Thodupuzha Highway, was established in 1918 as a Kurisupalli (wayside cross chapel) under the Pravithanam parish. The present beautiful structure was constructed during the tenure of the esteemed Rev. Fr. Francis Paraplackal as vicar.
This chapel holds a special place in the hearts of people across communities — including those of different faiths, as well as local workers and traders — who come together in devotion. Every year, the feast of St. Sebastian is celebrated here with great reverence and devotion.
After Rev. Fr. George Velooparambil became vicar, a statue of St. Michael the Archangel was installed in the chapel. Since then, the Holy Qurbana is celebrated every Friday at 5:00 p.m.
🕍 2. Pravithanam Cherupushpam Chapel
The Cherupushpam Chapel in Pravithanam was established in 1927 and is dedicated to St. Thérèse of Lisieux (popularly known as St. Little Thérèse). The feast of St. Thérèse is solemnly celebrated here every year with deep devotion.A notable part of the celebration is the devotional procession that leads to the Sacred Heart Chapel of Anthinad, which draws participation from numerous faithful and remains a cherished tradition of the parish
🏡 3. Carmel Convent (CMC), Pravithanam
The Pravithanam Carmelite Convent was founded on May 16, 1950, the feast day of St. Simon Stock, by the then parish priest Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Karuvelil. It is operated under the Pala Jayamatha Province of the CMC Congregation.
The respected sisters of the convent have been actively involved in the parish’s educational mission, serving as teachers from nursery to higher secondary levels in the local schools.
🏡 4. Mariabhavan Convent & MKM Hospital, Pravithanam
On December 3, 1973, during the tenure of Rev. Fr. Manichan Cherukarakkunnel as vicar, the Congregation of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, founded by St. Katharina Kasper in Germany, established the Mariabhavan Convent in Pravithanam under their Bangalore Province.
🏡 5. Sacred Heart Convent (S.H.), Pravithanam
Under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Zacharias Maniyangatt, the then Vicar,a convent of the Sacred Heart Sisters from the Changanassery Province was established in Pravithanam in 2004. The Archdiocese of Changanassery entrusted them with the care and preservation of the ancestral home of Mar Mathew Kavukattu, the first Metropolitan Archbishop of Changanassery and a native of Pravithanam Parish.
The convent is situated adjacent to the revered birthplace of Mar Kavukattu, allowing the sisters to continue his legacy of service and devotion.
🏡 6. Benedictine Sisters of St. Lioba (O.S.B.) House & Lioba Hostel
During the tenure of Rev. Fr. Francis Paraplakal as vicar, a convent of the Benedictine Sisters of St. Lioba (O.S.B.) was established in Pravithanam in 2005 under the Bhopal Province of the congregation. Alongside the convent, the Lioba Hostel was inaugurated to provide safe and nurturing accommodation for girls.
The sisters actively serve the parish community through family visits, pastoral ministry, and youth ministry, offering their dedicated support to the spiritual and social life of the parish.
