The Guardian of Pravithanam
St. Michael, the chief messenger who understands the hearts of the sorrowful, is venerated as a co-mediator at the Pravithanam church. The Church honors St. Michael, the leader of God’s heavenly armies, as a saint who protects against demonic powers.
It is believed that during the 18th century, a beautiful sacred image of St. Michael the Archangel, crafted abroad, was installed in our church. From that time onwards, devotion to St. Michael the Archangel spread across the Pravithanam region, and numerous blessings were received through his intercession, as attested by the faithful. Until 1945, there were two churches in Pravithanam dedicated to St. Augustine and St. Michael the Archangel. It is believed that sometime in the early 20th century, the sacred image of St. Michael was brought to and installed in the main church. However, until the St. Michael’s church was demolished in 1945, the sacred image was ceremonially taken in procession from the main church to St. Michael’s church on the feast day, installed there, and then returned to the main church at the conclusion of the celebrations, as recorded by tradition. Not only the people of Pravithanam and the surrounding areas but also numerous individuals from various parts of Kerala, irrespective of caste or creed, seek the intercession of the saint.
A strong testament to the long-standing devotion to the Archangel in this area is the significant number of people named after St. Michael in many Christian families in Pravithanam and the surrounding areas. On January 24, 2024, a gathering of individuals bearing the name “Michael” from the parish and neighboring areas was held here, offering a unique experience for everyone.
The feast of St. Michael the Archangel, celebrated on the third Sunday of November, is observed as the main festival of the parish. This feast of the “Great Archangel Father” of Pravithanam is also popularly known as the “Vrischika Masathile Perunnal”.A majority of those who have moved away to distant places return each year to participate in this celebration.
