Pravithanam Parish has always given prime importance to education, nurturing generations of faithful through its institutions. Schools established under the guidance of the Church have not only uplifted the community but also reflected Christian values through service.


🏫 1. St. Augustine’s L.P. School, Pravithanam

St. Augustine’s Malayalam School was founded under the auspices of Pravithanam Church on May 22, 1916. It was the first educational institution in the area, marking the beginning of formal education in Pravithanam.

The school’s first manager was the esteemed Rev. Fr. Varkey Chandrankunnel, and its first headmaster was Mr. M. Krishnan Nair from Bharananganam. Over the years, the school has educated countless children and continues to shine as a beacon of learning under the name St. Augustine’s L.P. School. In 2016, the school celebrated its centenary with fitting grandeur.


🏫 2. St. Michael’s English Middle School (St. Michael’s High School)

As English education began gaining prominence across Kerala, St. Michael’s English Middle School was established on June 22, 1923, through the visionary leadership of then vicar Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Karuvelil.With the farsightedness and committed leadership of successive managers and headmasters, the school steadily progressed. On June 6, 1946, under the management of Rev. Fr. Ouseph Vellayiparambil, the school was elevated to a high school.

Rev. Dr. C.T. Kottaram, a renowned academician in Kerala, served as the school’s first headmaster. Under his guidance, the school rose to prominence as one of the best in the state. In March 1949, the first SSLC batch appeared for examinations and achieved a remarkable 89% pass rate, earning the school first rank in the state. This legacy continued with a 97.5% success rate in 1952 and a perfect 100% in 1955.

St. Michael’s High School, Pravithanam, has already made a lasting mark on Kerala’s educational landscape. It has also contributed significantly to the fields of arts, sports, and public life by nurturing many outstanding talents over the decades.


🏫 3.St. Michael’s Higher Secondary School

St. Michael’s High School, Pravithanam, was elevated to a Higher Secondary School in the academic year 2014–15. Rev. Fr. Thomas Nadakkal served as the first manager of the newly established higher secondary wing and Mr. Sunny Augustine Olikkal,the then headmaster of the high school was appointed as the first Principal-in-Charge.

The school began with a single batch of 50 students in the Science stream. In 2015, a Commerce stream was added. Mr. Sunny Joseph Manikkombel Kalappurakkal was appointed as the first full-time principal in 2018.

Today, St. Michael’s Higher Secondary School stands as one of the premier higher secondary institutions in the Pala Diocese, continuing Pravithanam’s proud legacy of academic excellence.

🏥 4. MKM Hospital & St. Catherine School of Nursing

Following the guidance of the first Bishop of the Pala Diocese, Mar Sebastian Vayalil, the Sisters of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ founded the area’s first hospital, named Mar Kavukattu Memorial Hospital  in 1973, adjacent to the convent. In 2002, they expanded their service by establishing the St. Catherine School of Nursing, which continues to function alongside the hospital offering vital health services and nurse training.
